This is the painting experiment I decided to discuss in the group crit today. I talked about how I explored the use of analogous colours which are colours next to each other on the colour wheel, in this case the red, purple and blue. Analogous colours match well and usually create a serene and comfortable design, which I contrasted with the use of black paint to create a sense of darkness and mystery. I like how the colours build up and how painting over the colours with big bold strokes of black (using a large paintbrush) obscures the original mark making. I also find that the eye is drawn just off centre to the section of red that is undisturbed by the black paint.
From the group discussion I found that the use of layering colours was successful and linked to the ideas of time and progression, as the layers of paint present the progression of the painting. It was also suggested that this was similar to the work of Frank Auerbach with the idea of continuously working over the original image and changing it.
To improve it was suggested that I used thicker paint such as oil paints or thicker layers of acrylic paint in order to define the separate layers more clearly. It was also suggested by the group to work on a different surface to paper, such as canvas or board in order to hold heavier amounts of paint.
