Collection and The Usher Gallery
Why do you
visit exhibitions and galleries? What do you think as you are walking around?
Do you ‘admire’ the works? Do you ‘like’ the work?
Stop
admiring and liking and start LOOKING &THINKING. What use is this
exhibition, this gallery, to me? What does the architecture say? Pick something
– a work, a frame, the building. Why have you chosen this? What about the work,
the object, the site interests you?
Always carry
a sketchbook and camera – write, sketch and take photos (unless you are
requested not to do so).
What does
influence mean? Appropriation, Pastiche, Homage – look these up.
Go back to
your studio – on the walk back think about what you’ve seen, talk to the person
beside you about what they have focused on. In you studio space you will work
in groups to produce a response to this provocation. Materials will be
provided.
