The Collection: Danica Maier

Visit to the Collection Museum to view Danica Maier's solo exhibition 'Stitch and Peacock'.

In this series of pieces Danica Maier contrasts the traditional values of tapestry and the innocence of children with the use of sexual and vulgar language. I found this use of juxtaposition very interesting as it made me consider the alternative concepts involved with tapestry. I feel Maier is expressing her views about what was considered woman's role in society.

Following this gallery visit, we went back to the studios and worked in groups to create a piece in response to Maier's work. Here is our piece:

In our group we explored the similar themes of juxtaposition and subversions, found in Maier's work, through a sculptural piece. With the materials of brown paper and bubble wrap as our starting point we used the table as the subject of our piece and wrapped it in the materials in order to subvert the use of the table: the table could no longer be used for its purpose as a table.
