Plaster Workshop

This workshop allowed me to expand my ideas for creating volume from the group tutorial. This was my first time using plaster, so I began by getting to understand the material, by mixing the plaster and becoming familiar with it. This in turn would allow for a better understanding of how plaster naturally moves and how I would be able to capture this.

To do so I collected waste plastic which I melted and distorted into shapes almost like splashes of water to use as moulds to create the appearance of the fluidity of wet plaster mix. However, during the process of melting the plastic I found that the plastic created very interesting sculptures in their own right. Showing the way scrap materials can be re used to create something entirely different. Upon this success, I was introduced to the artist Iris Van Herpen, who in a series of works, melts plastic to appear like water splashes and then displays them as dresses (as seen below).
