In this introduction session we briefly explored artists that create sculptures linking to the theme of volume.
In particular, artists that stood out for me were Eva Rothschild and Carol Bove, as they both separately explored the connection between the object and its presentation. Irish artist Rothschild, in her piece 'Yr Inner Child' (as seen below) enclosed volume in two very different ways through the contrast of the spherical sculpture with the rigid plinth, both of which capture her reference to the Minimalist movement.
Similarly, Carol Bove contrasts the fragility of the shells as the subject of her sculpture with the chunk of heavy concrete that it stands on in her piece 'Cuneiforms' (as seen below). There is also a contrast of materials, with her use of bronze, steel and concrete.
